The Honest Truth: Helping You Become a Safer Driver

At Drive Lincs Driver Training, I’m committed to not just helping you pass your driving test but also ensuring you become a safe, confident, and responsible driver for life. That’s why I’ve partnered with The Honest Truth, a national road safety campaign that provides valuable advice to new drivers on how to stay safe behind the wheel.

What Is The Honest Truth?

The Honest Truth is a road safety initiative designed to help new drivers understand key risks on the road and how to manage them. It highlights 10 essential truths—each one focusing on a major factor in road collisions.

The 10 Truths Every Driver Needs to Know

w

1. Distractions – Stay Focused, Stay Safe

Anything that takes your attention off the road—even for a split second—can lead to an accident. Whether it’s checking your phone, adjusting the radio, or chatting with passengers, distractions reduce your ability to react in time. Staying fully focused can save lives.

2. Speeding – Slow Down, Arrive Alive

Speed limits exist for a reason. Driving too fast reduces your ability to react to hazards and increases stopping distances. Even a few miles per hour over the limit can be the difference between stopping safely and a serious crash.

3. Seatbelts – The Easiest Way to Protect Yourself

Wearing a seatbelt is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce injury or death in a crash. Not only is it the law, but it could save your life. Remember, seatbelts aren’t just for the driver—everyone in the car should buckle up.

4. Drink Driving – Just One Drink Is Too Many

Alcohol affects your judgment, reaction times, and coordination—even at low levels. The safest approach is simple: if you’re driving, don’t drink. There’s no “safe” amount, and being under the limit doesn’t mean you’re safe to drive.

5. Drug Driving – Illegal or Prescription, It Still Affects You

Drugs—both legal and illegal—can seriously impair your driving. Even prescribed medication can affect reaction times and awareness. Always check if your medication affects driving ability, and never drive under the influence of any substance.

6. Mobile Phones – It Can Wait

Using a phone while driving is incredibly dangerous. Even hands-free use can be a distraction. Just a momentary glance at your phone can mean missing crucial hazards. The message or call can wait—your safety and the safety of others are more important.

7. Peer Pressure – Be the Driver, Not the Passenger

Friends in the car can be a big distraction, especially if they encourage risky driving. You’re in control—don’t let passengers push you into speeding, taking risks, or losing focus. Set the rules and make sure everyone respects them.

8. Fatigue – Tiredness Kills

Driving while tired slows reaction times and can be as dangerous as drink driving. If you feel drowsy, stop and take a break. Plan long journeys with rest stops and never push yourself to keep driving when you’re exhausted.

9. Vehicle Maintenance – A Safe Car Saves Lives

A well-maintained car is a safer car. Regularly check tyres, lights, brakes, and fluids to ensure everything is in working order. Something as simple as incorrect tyre pressure or worn-out brakes can make the difference in an emergency.

10. Vulnerable Road Users – Look Out for Others

Not everyone on the road is in a car. Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are more vulnerable and harder to see. Always check your mirrors, give plenty of space, and be extra cautious at junctions and crossings.

How It Works in Your Lessons

Each driving lesson will include one of The Honest Truth topics. We’ll watch a short two-minute video about that topic and discuss how it relates to your driving. We won’t be covering multiple truths in one lesson—this ensures you get the time to understand and apply each one properly without information overload.

Why It Matters

Passing your test is just the beginning. As a new driver, you are more at risk in your first year than at any other time in your driving life. Learning The Honest Truth will give you the skills and knowledge to drive safely, make good decisions, and protect yourself and others on the road.

20 Years Of Experience in Driver Training

I started out my driver training career on London buses! I was a classroom based trainer and assessor before I become an instructor out on the road.

I’m proud that I’ve passed many driving tests in my career, including car (of course!), bus and lorries. I have also been lucky enough to have passed an advanced driving test and have several driving and teaching related qualifications.

My Mission

I want you to be the safest driver you can be! the tests aren’t the end goal, they are part of the journey. You’ll learn everything you will need in order to be a safe (and great) driver!

My Vision

I’d love our roads to be some of the safest roads in the world. this starts with you! Just being able to drive a car is great, but I want people I help to learn to drive to be safe drivers. I want you to be great at driving! I don’t want your car to be an extension of your feet, I want the car to be an extension of you! Too many people get hurt or killed on out road every year, and I want this statistic to improve.
